Distressed diver call sends rescue teams racing to Lanier

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
BUFORD - Rescue teams from three counties sped to Lake Lanier Saturday morning to a report of a diver in distress but the diver soon surfaced, unharmed.

The call came in around 9:00 from Lower Overlook Park near Buford Dam, according to Gwinnett fire spokesman Tommy Rutledge.

"Two divers became separated and only the one surfaced," according to Rutledge. "The man who surfaced became increasingly concerned for the safety of the other diver and began to call for help from people on the shore."

However, Rutledge says, the second diver - who had not been in trouble - soon surfaced and the rescue effort was called off with no injuries to either diver.

"As rescue teams from Gwinnett, Forsyth, and Hall (counties) converged on the area, the second diver surfaced nearby. The two were spotted initially by a Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy who downgraded the response. The divers were together and gave the signal that they were both okay. As it turned out, the diver was not in any distress..."
