GAINESVILLE - A group of high school band members form South Hall will be in Hawaii July 4 to play on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri in Pearl Harbor.

The Honor Band of South Hall - consisting of members of the West Hall and Johnson High school bands - will be a part of the celebration of Hawaii's 50th anniversary as a state under the director West Hall band director Ernie Phillips and Dr. David Jones, band director at Johnson High.

The U.S. Missouri is the ship on which Japan surrendered in 1945... ending World War II.

Phillips said the entourage consists of 60 "playing band members, a dance line and a small flag line." In addition, there are 28 adult chaperones along for the trip.

He said planning for the event began last June and the fundraising continued until April 1. Phillips said three-day-a-week rehearsals began in late May. He said the band will play selection of patriotic and pop music.

The group is scheduled to return to Gainesville next Tuesday.
