Turns out June temps were not all that unusual

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - There has been a lot of talk the past couple of weeks abut how hot it is... and the temperatures have been running several degrees above normal for this time of the year.

But a check of shows that the twelve 90+ days recorded at the Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville last month were the same as the number recorded last June - and June 2007 had 16 days when the temperature reached 90 or better.

Rainfall, though, has been almost nil since mid-June... meaning many lawns that were a vibrant green the first part of the month and not so lush-looking. In addition the level of Lake Lanier has been on the decline the past couple of weeks. It was 1066.29 early Wednesday... which is 4.71 feet below full pool.
However, a year ago, when we were still in the midst of a prolonged drought, the level was ten feet lower - 1056.23.

The rainfall deficit in Gainesville for the first six months of the year is less than a foot - .83 of a foot.
