Georgia leads nation with 11 draft picks

ATHENS -- Georgia led the country with 11 players selected in this week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft including, two players taken in the first three rounds.

Florida and Ole Miss were second nationally with 10 players drafted apiece.

The 11 players drafted is also a school record. Previously, the most Bulldogs drafted in one year was six, most recently in 2008.

Rich Poythress was selected in the second round by the Seattle Mariners, Trevor Holder went in the third round to the Washington Nationals, Dean Weaver in the seventh round to the Nationals, and Matt Cerione in the 13th round to the Mariners. Jeff Walters was selected in the 17th round to the Baltimore Orioles, Michael Demperio in the 25th round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Alex McRee in the 26th round to the Dodgers, and Bryce Massanari in the 30th round to the Colorado Rockies.

Will Harvil was taken in the 32nd round to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Joey Lewis in the 41st round to the Kansas City Royals and Justin Earls in the 47th round to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Poythress, Weaver, Cerione, Walters, Demperio, McRee, Lewis and Earls are juniors while Holder, Massanari and Harvil are seniors.

Georgia had six signees drafted including Zach Dotson (13th round), Miles Head (26th round), Eric Swegman (28th round), Zach Taylor (31st round), Jake Montgomery (32nd round), and Malcolm Clappsaddle (34th round).

The Bulldogs have a string of 36 straight seasons with at least one player signing a professional contract.

Four former Bulldogs have seen action in the majors this season including Gordon Beckham (White Sox), Michell Boggs (Cardinals), Jeff Keppinger (Astros) and Clint Sammons (Braves).
