GAINESVILLE - The Hall County prisoner accused of severely beating a jailer four weeks ago faces a preliminary hearing later this month on the charges growing out of the incident.
Colonel Jeff Strickland of the Hall County Sheriff's Office says Devonte Hammond is scheduled to go before a county magistrate judge June 25th to face charges of aggravated battery and obstruction of an officer.
Hammond was being held on a number of charges including aggravated assault and robbery at the time of the May 23 incident which occurred as jailer Aaron Nguyen was escorting him from one section of the Hall County Detention Center to another. Nguyen suffered severe facial injuries, including broken bones. Colonel Strickland says Nguyen is out of the hospital and "recovering well" but is scheduled for sinus surgery.
Hammond, meanwhile, is being held in disciplinary segregation at the detention center pending his June 25 hearing.
