Suwanee teen dies in crash while racing with friend

SUWANEE - A Suwanee teenager is dead after he crashed his car during a race with one of his friends.

Gwinnett Police Corporal Illana Spellman identified the victim of the accident as Alexander W. Lebar, 18, of Suwanee. She said the accident happened on Suwanee Creek Road around 4:45 Friday afternoon.

Spellman said Lebar met two of his friends at Peachtree Ridge Park. One of the friends, Reymond C. Edwards, 18, also of Suwanee, drove the second car involved in the race; the other friend was a passenger in Edwards' car.

After leaving the park, Lebar and Edwards begain racing on Suwanee Creek Road. Lebar lost control of his vehicle in a curve and struck a mailbox and a tree, according to Spellman.

Edwards initially continued the race, but he returned to the scene just after the accident. He was arrested and charged with racing and reckless driving. The passenger was questioned and released.
