WOODSTOCK - The National Weather Service confirms that a tornado hit Cherokee County on Sunday, damaging 125 homes, including 12 that were destroyed.
The weather service said Monday the tornado was about a half-mile wide and left a path of destruction more than a mile long. Most of the damage was in the Knots Landing subdivision on Highway 92.
The weather service says the twister's intensity is consistent with EF-0 and EF-1 damage. An EF-0 tornado has wind speeds 40-72 mph. An EF-1 is a moderate tornado with winds 73-112 mph.
Tornadoes also were reported, but not yet confirmed, in Cobb and Muscogee counties, and there was a tornado warning issued for Fulton on Sunday night.
