HOMER - Banks County school employees will see smaller paychecks next school year, after the Board of Education voted Thursday night to cut the local supplement.
"Instead of being a 6 percent supplement, we'll have a 3 percent supplement for teachers," said Superintendent Chris Erwin.
Erwin said he knows the cuts are painful, but he made the recommendation hoping to avoid a large number of layoffs.
"I would assume that our reduction in salaries would cut our layoffs at least in half," he said.
The 3 percent reduction also includes classified employees, in addition to certified teachers.
The Banks County School System employs about 450 people.
