CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson is the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year after guiding the top-ranked Tar Heels to the league's regular-season championship.
Lawson earned 31 of 76 votes from Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association members in results released Tuesday. Florida State's Toney Douglas finished second with 27 votes after helping the Seminoles finish fourth in the regular season.
Reigning league and national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough was third with 13 votes.
Lawson is only the second point guard to win the award, joining Phil Ford. North Carolina has won the award 13 times, which is tied with Duke for most in league history.
