CARROLLTON -- For three quarters Chestatee played toe-to-toe with No. 1 Carrollton in the second round of the Class AAA girls state basketball playoffs Tuesday.
But the Lady Trojans showed why they are so tough holding the Lady War Eagles to just three fourth quarter points and eventually pulled away for a 40-24 win.
Carrollton led most of the way leading 11-7 after the first quarter, 16-9 at halftime, and took a 28-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Chestatee closed to within four points early in the final period but could not get any closer.
Chestatee coach Web Daniel said they are pleased with how the season went despite the loss to Carrollton.
"We felt it was a real good season," Daniel said. "We made the (state) playoffs for the first time, beat the No. 3 team (Franklin County) in the first round, and played right with the No. 1 team for most of the game. The girls gave us all they had."
After Chestatee got to within four points Carrollton forced two straight turnovers and quicly pushed the lead to eight points. The Lady war eagles were forced to foul over the final couple of minutes to try and get back in the game but the Lady Trojans hit six free throws down the stretch to extend their lead.
Peyton Robertson finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Chestatee, which finished at 17-12 on the year. Melissa Bailey had five points and Shelby Bright four for the Lady War Eagles, who were held to just one 3-pointer on the night.
