Thousands still without power

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - Thousands of Georgia Power customers were still in the early Monday morning following Sunday's snow storm that sent trees and tree limbs crashing across powerlines.

Georgia Power's Jeff Wilson told Fox 5 News that as late as early morning "we have about 1,700 customers out in the metro Atlanta area (mostly) in the Clarkston, in the North Fulton, Sandy Springs area. And, statewide, we still have about 27,000 customers out, most of those in the Athens-Winder area."

Power outages were also reported in Jackson County.

Christy Heiser, a Georgia Power spokeswoman, said crews restored electricity to about half of the 57,000 customers who were cut off Sunday night.
Terri Statham of the Georgia Electrical Membership Corp. said approximately 34,000 of its customers were without electricity early Monday.
Utility officials said trees falling on power lines were the biggest problem and crews hope to have electricity restored by Monday evening.

The snow was confined mainly to parts of Georgia along and south of a line from Carrollton-to-Atlanta-to-Gainesville-to-Elberton. Up to eight inches fell in some places.
