NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jordan Fox and Dirk Southern each had two assists for Gwinnett but it wasn't enough as the Gladiators dropped a 6-4 decision to the South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday evening at the North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett drops to 24-24-6 on the season in the loss.
South Carolina took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators early in the first period as Jeff Corey was able to capitalize on a Gladiators turn over deep inside with Gwinnett zone. Corey slipped the puck past Gladiators netminder Dan Turple for the marker at 3:26 of the first period. Scott Romfo and Pierre-Luc O'Brien had the assists on the goal for the Stingrays.
Gwinnett answered on a 5-on-3 power play goal at 10:56 of the opening period. Jeff Mason was parked on the off wing and took a rink wide pass from Jordan Fox before beating Stingrays netmidner Jonathan Boutin for the goal. Dirk Southern also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Travis Morin was able to deflect Brad Farynuk's slapshot from the point past Turple at 12:26 of the first period to regain the lead at 2-1 for South Carolina. The marker came on the power play for the Stingrays.
Gwinnett posted the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission. Adam Berti had the first of the Gladiators two goals late in the first period. Berti found a loose puck in the slot before sliding the puck past Boutin for the marker at 16:51 of the first period. Scott Marchesi and Dan Sullivan collected the assists on the goal for Gwinnett.
Pat Bateman's 17th goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 3-2 lead at 18:20 of the first period. Bateman took a centering pass in the slot from Jean-Claude Sawyer and ripped a snap shot past Boutin for the goal. Bateman's marker came on the power play for Gwinnett.
Gwinnett pushed its lead to 4-2 on Brennan Turner's 3rd goal of the season. Stepping out of the penalty box, Turner slipped behind the South Carolina defense before taking an outlet pass from Dirk Southern and beating Boutin on a breakway just 1:16 into the second period.
The Stingrays battled back in the second period as O'Brien answered for the Stingrays just 1:14 after Turner's goal to cut the Gladiators lead back to one goal. Trent Campbell and Jeff Corey collected the assists on the marker for South Carolina at 2:30 of the second period.
Corey added his second goal of the game to tie the game at four at 18:08 of the second period as he was left all alone in the slot before taking a pass and rolling the puck past Turple for the marker. Campbell had his second assist of the game for the Stingrays on the marker. O'Brien also had and an assist on the goal for the Stingrays.
Boutin left the contest as he picked up a game misconduct with just 25 seconds left in the second period getting into a goaltender fight with Dan Turple. Boutin came flying down the length of the ice to fight Turple after the Gwinnett netminder got tangled up with a Stingrays player.
Michael Dubic gave the Stingrays a 5-4 lead at 18:08 of the third period. Dubic was left wide open on the far post where he found a loose puck and rolled it past and out-of-position Turple for the Stingrays goal. Morin and Maxime Lacroix had the assists on the goal at 13:10 of the third period.
South Carolina put the contest away with 3:01 left in the third period on Morin's second goal of the night. Morin deflected a slapshot from the point past Turple for the goal giving South Carolina a 6-4 lead. Romfo and Josh Godfrey had the assists on the power play goal for the Stingrays.
Turple finished with 26 saves for the Gladiators in the loss. Gwinnett went 2-for-7 on the power play while giving up three goals on the man advantage to the Stingrays in the loss.
The Gladiators continue the 2008-09 season on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 as they travel to Biloxi, Mississippi to take on the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Mississippi Coast Coiseum at 8:05 p.m.
