GAINESVILLE -- The Jefferson baseball team got its season off to a strong start on Monday night with a 17-9 defeat of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.
The Dragons (1-0) jumped on the Eagles (0-1) early, posting nine runs in the first three innings and taking an 11-1 lead before Riverside pulled within 11-6 in the bottom of the fifth. The game between the two Region 8-AA combatants did not count in the region standings.
Chris Swancey (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Jefferson, pitching just three innings while allowing only one earned, run three hits and no walks.
Lucas Bersin (0-1) suffered the loss for Riverside, giving up six runs, three earned, in three innings work.
Jake Fields and Jason Demos led the Dragon assault at the plate, each going 2-for-3. Fields racked up 3 RBIs and had two doubles, while Demos has 2 RBIs, a double and a triple. Corey Wilkins and Caleb Meek also drove in two runs each for Jefferson. Chris Beck and Lucas Redd also had RBIs.
Brian Kerekes paced the Eagles, going 2-for-4 with a home run, while Jeffrey Koren also went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Patrick Wermert and Bersin also drove in two runs apiece.
Jefferson will travel to Madison County on Thursday.
