TAMPA, Fla. - Retail gasoline prices declined this past week - in the state and nationwide - as crude oil continued to trade in a low range on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Americans drove 3.8 billion fewer miles in December 2008 than they drove in December 2007 the 14 consecutive month of decline in miles driven.
"For the first time in 2009 we are seeing gasoline prices moving in concert with crude oil prices and it appears is tied to a supply that continues to outpace demand, despite reductions by both OPEC and our own refineries," said Gregg Laskoski, managing director of public relations, AAA Auto Club South. " OPEC is scheduled to meet on March 15 and in their efforts to close the gap between supply and declining worldwide demand, it may ask its members to comply with yet another reduction in oil production."
Nationwide, the price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline decreased by five-cents per gallon. During the same period, the price in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee decreased by 4-cents; 5-cents and 6-cents per gallon respectively.
Crude oil closed Friday on the NYMEX at $38.94 per barrel.
