Civil War trail links Gainesville, Milledgeville

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - It's Georgia's Civil War Heartland Leaders Trial... and it runs through what is called the state's "Civil War Heartland" beginning in Gainesville and ending in Milledgeville there is a now a highway marker designating it as such.

The marker has been in place since August, according to the state Department of Transporation, so, perhaps, you've seen it but wasn't sure what it was all about. It's on Athens Highway, U.S. 129, near Talmo.

A brochure lists 46 points of interest including several connected to Confederate Gen. James Longstreet who lived in Gainesville after the war. Others are located in Athens and Jefferson.

Included are sites where the South's political leaders' ideas of secession had their beginning. And, ironically, it was in this region that the final Confederate cabinet meeting was held.
