Early morning snow closes Rabun Co. schools

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - Light snow began falling before daybreak in Rabun County, leading school officials there to cancel classes for today.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place in Rabun County for today and tomorrow... with up to two inches of snow possible.

Elsewhere in north Georgia, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect for up to 3 inches of rain - and gusty winds are expected to reach 35 miles an hour or more today.

Forecaster Laura Griffith with the National Weather Service (NWS) says the soil is still saturated from earlier rains, so rainfall of even an inch or two can cause minor to moderate flooding.

And, temperatures will be below normal in north Georgia for this time of the year... reaching only into the 30s in most places and those brisk winds will send wind chills into the 20s.

The chance of precipitation diminishes on Saturday, with clearing skies forecast for Sunday and slightly warmer temperatures.

FLORIDA FLOODS; OTHER SNOW FORECAST

Homes are flooded and drivers were stranded in parts of South Florida as a wet storm system from the Gulf headed north with snow forecast along much of the Atlantic seaboard.

Winter storm warnings were issued Friday from the Carolinas and far eastern Tennessee to New Jersey ahead of forecast snow across the Mid-Atlantic. Parts of western and central Virginia could get up to 18 inches of snow this weekend.

Water rose knee-deep in downtown Miami and more than a foot in Hollywood, 20 miles north. Near Hollywood, a fire truck responding to a call reportedly stalled in rising water.

The National Weather Service predicts thunderstorms Friday morning along the Florida Atlantic coast and a potential for tornados and damaging wind gusts.
