Fire damages Gainesville apartment

GAINESVILLE - Fire caused about $40,000 damage to a Gainesville apartment Wednesday night.

Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said the fire was confined to one unit at Park Crossing Apartments on Park Hill Drive although one unit on the floor above it did receive some smoke damage.

Canada says the fire was discovered by the occupant of the unit where the fire occurred when she returned home from church about 7:45. "We were lucky that she discovered the fire when she did before it had time to spread to the rest of the building."

Chief Canada says the fire started because some clothing had been left against a water heater in the apartment.
