By Staff
ATLANTA - Nearly 50 people have graduated from the latest leadership institute sponsored by the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO).

There were a total of 44 graduates from programs in Atlanta and Gainesville.
The graduates were participating in one of four sites active across the state: Atlanta (English), Gainesville (Spanish), Gainesville State College (English), Atlanta (Spanish).

GALEO Institute for Leadership graduates heard from State Representative Pedro Marin WHO encouraged theM to continue to work together within their own communities and to engage further with GALEO's efforts.

The leadership program prepared them to confront community issues affecting Georgia, such as the upcoming 2010 Census, immigration reform, poverty, education, domestic violence, worker's rights and healthcare.

The GALEO Latino Community Development Fund has implemented the GALEO Institute for Leadership to focus upon the leadership development of the Latino community across the state. As part of the GALEO Institute for Leadership, GALEO formed a strategic partnership with the University of Georgia's Fanning Institute to expand and develop our joint efforts for the Community Leadership Program.

The graduates dedicated more than 30 hours during the last several months to complete eight modules and a group project.

This is the seventh group of graduates of GALEO's leadership development efforts. The total number of GALEO Institute for Leadership alumni stands at 255 people from all across the state.

This leadership program was made possible in part by the Sapelo Foundation, New World Foundation, University of Georgia-Fanning Institute, GALEO, and individual donors.

The GALEO Institute for Leadership plans to continue the leadership sessions for the Spring 2010. Target locations will be within the Metro Atlanta area only.
