Georgia food stamp usage jumps

ATLANTA - State data shows that 211,323 more Georgians were on food stamps in September than at the start of the recession.

Data gathered by the Department of Human Resources also shows that since the official start of the recession in December 2007, every Georgia county has seen an increase in use, ranging from a few dozen more cases to thousands.

DeKalb County had 46,528 food stamp cases in September, compared to 30,304 at the start of the recession. Clayton County added nearly 10,000 cases and Fulton County jumped from 47,744 cases to 72,937.

Smaller increases came in some historically poorer counties, including Hancock, which saw only 264 additional cases. Glascock County also had a small increase only 57 new cases. Stewart County saw just 28 new cases.
