BUFORD - Lake Lanier is beginning the new month about a quarter-of-a-foot from full pool... the level having been steadily dropping for about a week.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had said it would be lowering the level as we moved closer to winter... shooting for 1070 by today.
"That allows us to capture the excess water from rains during the winter and spring months," corps spokesman Patrick Robbins said in October.
Robbins said at the time forecasters are expecting a particularly wet winter this year, so the corps must release some of the water in the lake to prevent flooding. He added all of the lakes in the Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River System are brought down sometime in the fall to prepare for wetter winter months. He said residents should not notice a significant change in the lake's levels.
Normal operations were suspended during the prolonged drought, which ended earlier this year, and which also took the lake to an all-time low just two years ago.
The level of Lanier reached full pool, which is 1071, in mid-October for the first time in four years. The level early today was 1071.26.
