BUFORD -- The Buford defense held Cook County to just seven yards rushing and pitched its eighth shutout of the season Friday night in a 26-0 whipping of Hornets in the third round of the Class AA state football playoffs.
The two-time defending state champion Wolves (12-1) next will face a rematch with Fitzgerald (13-0) in the semifinals in Fitzgerald. Buford knocked off the Purple Hurricanes two years ago in the semifinals in the only meeting ever between the two schools.
It will be the classic contrast in styles. The Hurricanes are averaging 47 points a game while Buford has allowed just 78 points (6.0 ppg) all season.
Against Cook County, Buford capped a nice drive with a 1-yard run from Nathan Staub for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Jessel Curry added a 2-yard run in the second quarter to give the Wolves a 13-0 lead that would stay that way until halftime.
Buford put the game away in the fourth quarter with touchdown runs from Staub and Rick Legrangt, whose 27-yard score with just over one minute left in the game sealed the win for the Wolves.
Buford finished with 321 yards rushing, led by Sean Jones, who had 100 yards on 18 carries for the game. Darin Smith had 87 yards on nine carries.
