WINDER - In a game where the offenses could not be stopped, Apalachee coaches made sure they would have the ball last Friday night in its Class AAAA second round playoff game against Marist.
The Wildcats put their season on the line electing to go for a two-point conversion in the first overtime and Christian Hoard slammed into the end zone to give them a thrilling 36-35 win.
Hoard put the Wildcats in position to win with his third touchdown of the game in the first overtime. Marist had taken a 35-28 lead on a touchdown and extra point on its first overtime possession.
Apalachee never led in the game until the final play but also never trailed by more than seven points. The Wildcats tied the game at 28-28 with six minutes left in regulation converting a fourth-and-10 on a hook-and-ladder play and then Jon Ansley finished off the drive scoring his second touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run.
The Wildcats had a chance to win the game in regulation but missed a 45-yard field goal with just over a minute left. They then stopped Marist on downs forcing the overtime.
Apalachee will take on Griffin next week and the two coaches will meet Saturday for a coin flip to determine homefield advantage.
