DARLINGTON - Darlington apparently did not want to get beat by Commerce's dynamic running back Deon Brock Friday night in the two teams' Class A second round state playoff matchup.
Darlington keyed on Brock and held the senior to just 26 yards on 12 carries while its defense forced three Commerce turnovers in a 28-14 win.
The biggest play of the game came midway through the fourth quarter when Commerce fumbled at the Darlington 10 with a chance to tie the game at 21-21. Darlington took advantage of the mistake and drove 90-yards in 17 plays, capped by a Cedrick Spivey 5-yard TD run late in the game.
Commerce had climbed back from a 21-7 deficit early in the second half when Cody Streetman connected with Carl Allen for a 35-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 21-14. Commerce then forced a Darlington punt and looked to be driving for the tying score.
Commerce took the early lead on a 24-yard touchdown run from Jon Cash. But Darlington then scored 21 unanswered points, one off an interception that led to a short touchdown pass for a 14-7 lead.
Streetman did most of the damage for Commerce rushing for 104 yards and passing for nearly 100 yards and one touchdown.
Spivey scored two touchdowns to pace Darlington.
