Flooding persists in Atlanta area

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - The rain-swollen Chattahoochee River spilled out of its banks in Vinings, flooding streets and covering neighborhoods on both sides of the river with water.

Some homes that usually have river views, sat surrounded by water.
The rain has largely moved out of the metro-Atlanta area Wednesday after dumping more than four inches in the region.

Moderate flooding was also reported along Nancy Creek near West Wesley Road.
A flash flood watch for most of north and central Georgia was lifted Wednesday morning.

Scattered power outages are still being reported as strong winds continue to topple trees in some places, pulling down powerlines in the process and resulting in widespread power outages. Some of the outages occurred in Gainesville. (See separate story.)

Banks County was especially hard hit. So many trees and powerlines were brought down that county schools were called off Wednesday .

The top wind gust at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville has been 39 miles-an-hour since what's left of Hurricane Ida began affecting weather in north Georgia.

Rainfall at the airport in Gainesville totaled 3.95 inches by the time the rain stopped late Wednesday morning. Cumming, however, picked up about 5.5 inches.

Flood warnings were issued late Tuesday night for some north Georgia rivers. (See separate posting.)
