Former Times editor dies

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A former longtime editor of the Times has died.

Bob Campbell Jr., 88, died Sunday at his home in his native Asheville , North Carolina.

Campbell and his wife, Anne, had lived in Asheville since he retired from a long tenure with the Gainesville newspaper several years ago.

According to the funeral home in Asheville which is handling services for Campbell, he was a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York and during his lengthy career as a newspaperman was awarded a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.

During his career, in addition to his work at the Times, he also served as a reporter and city editor at the Asheville Citizen, Asheville, N.C.; editorial page editor of the Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel, Winston-Salem, N.C.; director of the Southern Education Reporting Service, Nashville, Tenn.; and editor of The Times in Gainesville.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 in the Campbell Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, Asheville, N.C.
