DAHLONEGA - Gold Creek Foods, which processes poultry, beef and pork for restaurants, schools, groceries, military and retail markets, has completed its negotiations with Mohawk Industries to acquire its 35-acre site in Dahlonega.
The purchase culminates months of negotiations and the approval of a conditional use permit by the Dahlonega City Council.
Gold Creek Foods began a site selection process more than two years ago to identify sites for its expansion program. Founded in 2003, Gold Creek Foods became interested in the Mohawk opportunity because of its location, size and proximity to its existing operations in Dawsonville.
"The company has been limited in production at its 53,000 square feet plant in Dawsonville, and is pleased with the demand for its products which prompted the process of expanding," according to a spokesman.
The company partnered with the Lumpkin County Development Authority to retain an engineering firm for the design of a wastewater pre-treatment plant on the site. It is also working with the Georgia Department of Labor, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, One Georgia and the US Economic Development Administration based on the region's high unemployment data. The Department of Labor released unemployment data at 9.4% for September throughout the Georgia mountains region.
"From here, Gold Creek Foods proceeds to redesign the interior of the plant to accommodate equipment and systems to be installed," the spokesman added, "and remain focused on the plan to begin production in 2010."
Projected to have an initial workforce of 100, the company's business plans calls for gradual growth.
