MT. AIRY - Class AAAA No. 9 Apalachee scored 21 points in the second quarter and then held on in the second half to beat Habersham Central 21-13 Friday night at Raider Stadium.
It wasn't until the second half that the Raiders (3-4, 3-4 in Region 8-AAAA) finally got going. Quarterback Austin Brown capped a quick drive to open the second half connecting with Chuck Rucker on a 28-yard pass to cut the lead to 21-7.
After the two teams traded punts the rest of the third quarter, Rucker struck again early in the fourth quarter returning an Apalachee punt 65-yards for a touchdown to make it 21-13 after Apalachee blcoked the extra point.
The Raiders, as they have done many times this season, mounted a late drive to the Apalachee 20 but the Wildcats held on downs knocking down Brown's final two passes into the end zone with just under one minute left in the game.
The Raiders had their lowest offensive output of the season with just 167 total yards.
Apalachee (6-0, 6-0) was paced by John Lee, who had 94 yards rushing, and John Ansley, who had 84 yards rushing and one touchdown and added another touchdown receiving. The Wildcats managed just 281 yards for the game.
