WASHINGTON - Hall and Gwinnett counties lead the Gainesville area when it comes to the number of residents who lack basic prose literacy skills, according to a new report.
The report from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCSE) shows 25 percent of Hall County residents and 19 percent of the people living in Gwinnett - who are 16 and older - fall into that category.
By comparison, 17 percent of all Georgians were found lacking such skills.
The U.S. Department of Education Web site defines prose literacy as including "the skills needed to understand continuous text, such as newspaper articles."
Elsewhere in the Gainesville area, 17 percent of people in Banks County are considered lacking in basic prose literacy skills; 14 percent in Barrow; ten percent in Dawson; eight percent in Forsyth; 18 percent in Habersham; 16 percent in Jackson; 13 percent in Lumpkin; and 13 percent in White.
