Durham, Landers among 9 selected to Hall of Fame

MACON -- Former Georgia basketball coach Hugh Durham and current Georgia women's coach Andy Landers are among nine selected to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Former NFL star Shannon Sharpe and former NBA star Jeff Malone also are among the nine who will be honored on Feb. 28.

Others selected include Milton A. Byard, Terry Hoage, Mills Lane, George Rose and Roman Turmon.

The nine were selected Thursday from 35 nominees.

``The talent represented in the class of 2009 is overwhelming,'' said Hall of Fame executive director Jacquelyn Decell. ``Right now I have the best job around as I call each of our new inductees to inform them of their selection.''

Durham was a three-time Southeastern Conference coach of the year as Georgia's coach from 1978-95. He led the Bulldogs to their only Final Four appearance. He also coached Florida State to the Final Four.

Landers, inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, has been Georgia's coach since 1979 and is 789-246 to rank fourth among wins in NCAA history.

Byard scored 50 touchdowns, including 10 in one game, for Risley High in Brunswick in 1950. Both are state records for Byard, who led Risley to football, basketball and track state championships.

Hoage had 12 interceptions for Georgia in 1982 before playing 13 seasons in the NFL. He was a member of the Washington Redskins Super Bowl championship team in 1992.

Lane, a native of Savannah, is an attorney, judge and boxing referee who has been in the ring for 102 championship fights, including the 1997 ``bite'' fight between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson.

Malone, from Macon, led Southwest High to the 1979 state championship before starring for Mississippi State. He was a two-time All-Star in the NBA.

Rose was a two-time all-state running back for Glynn Academy in Brunswick in 1958-59 before becoming a two-way player and team captain for Auburn University. He led the Minnesota Vikings in interceptions as a rookie in 1964 and played for the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers before retiring in 1969.

Sharpe was a three-time All-America receiver at Savannah State before setting receiving records for NFL tight ends. He won three Super Bowl rings, two with Denver and one with Baltimore.

Turmon was a star basketball player at Clark College in the early 1950s before beginning a professional career that including time with the Harlem Globetrotters and one season with the New York Knicks.
