EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) The New York Giants kicked off 2008 NFL season in the same manner in which they won last season's Super Bowl -- with their trademark stingy defense.
Playing without retired Pro Bowl linemen Michael Strahan and injured Osi Umenyiora, the Giants defense limited the new-look Washington Redskins to 11 first downs and 209 total yards in a 16-7 victory.
Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning capped a game-opening 84-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Recently signed John Carney kicked three field goals as the Giants scored on their first four possessions. The Redskins scored with 13 seconds left in the first half. The second half was scoreless.
The loss spoiled the NFL head coaching debut of Jim Zorn, the Redskins' sixth coach in the last 10 years.
