ATHENS -- University of Georgia football coach Mark Richt confirmed in a press conference on Sunday that Bulldogs defensive tackle Jeff Owens will miss the rest of the season.
Owens, a senior standout, suffered a torn ACL Saturday in the No. 1 ranked Bulldogs' 45-21 win over Georgia Southern in Athens.
Owens suffered the injury in the first quarter.
The senior would be available for a medical redshirt -- an option Richt said that Owens would pursue on Saturday should he miss the rest of the season.
With junior defensive tackle Kade Weston already out at least one more week with a sprained knee, Owens' injury could test Georgia's depth at defensive tackle. Senior Corvey Irvin and junior Geno Atkins will probably start at defenisve tackle, with sophomores Brandon Wood and Ricardo Crawford likely first off the bench. Freshman DeAngelo Tyson will also see increased playing time after already getting on the field this past Saturday.
The Bulldogs return to action at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Central Michigan in Athens.
