Two jailed following home invasion

GAINESVILLE - Thanks to neighbors who responded to the victim's cries for help, two men are in jail this morning, charged with a home invasion last night in which a 78-year-old Gainesville man was robbed.

Gainesville Police Lt. Gary Entrekin said the pair knocked on the door of Howard Mahafee's apartment on Jesse Jewell Parkway about 9 p.m., and when Mahafee opened it they asked him for some cigarettes.

Lt. Entrekin said when Mahafee turned his back on the pair, they forced their way inside and one held him on the floor while the other took his money.

But Mahafee yelled for help and several neighbors came to his aid, subduing one suspect, 42-year-old Terry Bernard Randolph, until police arrived. The second suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Danny Pye, was arrested about two hours later at his Hazel Street home. Mahafee was not injured.
