Tornado watches

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - A tornado watch has been posted for parts of northeast Georgia.

It's in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday for Elbert, Franklin and Hart counties, and also includes parts of North Carolina and South Carolina.

Another tornado watch, also in place until 7 p.m., is for 28 counties in central Georgia.

The southwestern corner of Georgia remains under a tornado watch as well, but no tornadoes had been reported. The Weather Service also issued a tornado warning early Tuesday for Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties, but it expired just before 9 a.m.

Nine inches of rain had fallen in Toccoa by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Elsewhere in northeast Georgia, representative amounts included, as of 9 a.m. Tuesday: 6.9 inches in Cornelia; 5.67 in Helen; 2.38 in Dahlonega; 4.17 in Clayton; 1.74 in Buford; 1.65 in Braselton; and, 3.55 in Gainesville.

Meanwhile, a flood watch remains in effect for the northern half of Georgia through Tuesday night as the remnants of Fay soaked the state with driving rain.

The National Weather Service office at Peachtree City said no major flooding had been reported. The heavy rain caused pooling on roads, reduced visibility and slowed morning rush hour into downtown Atlanta.

Tropical Depression Fay was centered near Tuscaloosa, Ala., just before daybreak. It is expected to continue moving northeastward into Tennessee.
