GAINESVILLE - Both sides rested this morning in the murder trial of Ignacio Vergara in Hall County Superior Court, with the defense declining to put up any evidence.
Vergara, who is charged with a double murder in Flowery Branch six years ago, declined to testify. He has pleaded not guilty to the felony murder charges, in addition to a number of other charges.
After the state reviewed its evidence and rested its case, Judge John Girardeau heard from defense attorney Lee Parks, who made motions for directed verdicts of acquittal on several charges in the case. Some were granted, but not the felony murder charges.
The jury is expected to hear closing arguments at 2:30 this afternoon, and then they will be handed the case to begin their deliberation.
If convicted, Vergara faces a possible death sentence.
