The Lanier Soccer Association under-12 Boys Gold soccer team won the U-12 Elite Division in the Lanier Soccer Association Academy Cup Tournament, held August 16-17 at the Allen Creek Soccer Complex in Gainesville.
The Sharks, coached by Todd Rife and Will Filson, defeated their local rivals -- Hall County YMCA Stars Black, coached by Edmund Villafranca -- 2-1 in the championship game.
The Sharks, winners of Group A, reached the final by defeating Buckhead F.C. Gold 9-0 in Saturday's opening game, then defeating the North Georgia Rapids 8-2 Saturday afternoon.
Having already won Group A, the Sharks lost Sunday morning to Cherokee Impact 97 Gold, 3-1.
The YMCA Stars won Group B, defeating Cherokee Impact 97 Gold 5-4 and Buckhead F.C. Gold 6-0. In Sunday morning's game, the Stars tied Dacula F.C. White, 1-1.
Simon Cobian and team captain Jake Stephens scored for the Sharks in the championship game. The Stars' goal was scored by Eduardo Villafranca.
