GAINESVILLE - Northeast Georgia History Center visitors soon will see how Gainesville became the "Poultry Capital of the World."
The History Center's new poultry exhibit is a "work in progress" right now, according to Managing Director Glen Kyle.
"This will basically tell the story of chickens and their role in this society, all the way from the back yard to the huge factories we have now," Kyle said.
Kyle added that a reconstructed original chicken house in a permanent exhibit will contain videos, photographs and artifacts telling the story of how poultry became an economic mainstay in this region.
Kyle said poultry is one of the three major economic impacts and will take its place in the History Center's "Land of Promise" section.
"We have poultry, of course, the textile industry and the building of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier," Kyle said.
The exhibit is scheduled for an admission-free public opening Saturday, Sept. 13.
Kyle said the following day, Sunday, Sept. 14, the History Center starts its "Family Days," offering special activities for children and parents. Family Day will be held every second Tuesday.
