Rice heading to Georgia with new cease-fire agreement

By The Associated Press
FORT DE BREGANCON, France (AP) Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is heading to Georgia with a new cease-fire plan that would allow Russia to keep some troops in the tiny former Soviet republic.

U.S. officials also say those troops would be temporarily allowed to patrol a strip up to six miles outside the area.

The concessions to Moscow follow stern words from President Bush, who repeated his call for the cease-fire to be honored and demanded that Russia respect the ``territorial integrity'' of Georgia. Russian and Georgian forces have been fighting since Georgia sought to regain control of a breakaway province.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon says there are fewer than 100 U.S. military personnel on the ground in Georgia now, including about 60 U.S. Special Forces and Marines. They've been there for a while to train local troops on their way to deployment in Iraq.
