GAINESVILLE - With most schools in the area opening later this week, school supplies are in big demand these days - and one Gainesville church went the extra mile over the weekend to help needy students get what they need.
It was the second annual Back-to-School-Supplies-Give-Away at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Summit Street, sponsored by the church's Community Outreach program.
Organizers say nearly 300 youngsters got book bags filled with school supplies.
Free haircuts were also available, as well as food and face-painting.
Some 30 volunteers were on hand to help with the distribution of the food and school supplies and other activities. More than 270 children received book bags filled with much need school supplies.
A number of businesses in the community helped with the program: Cargill Inc.; Target; Publix; Longstreet Cafe; Papa John's Pizza; Domino's Pizza; Cici's Pizza; Geyer Printing; McDonald's; Children's Dentistry; the Hall County Health Department; United Way of Hall County; the Progressive Men's Club; the Grady Young Foundation; Sunshine Seniors and Party City.
The program will continue through the end of August.
