Taurasi leads Mercury past Dream

PHOENIX - Diana Taurasi scored 21 points in 22 minutes to lead the Phoenix Mercury past the Atlanta Dream 110-84 on Saturday night.

Cappie Pondexter, second in the league in scoring behind Taurasi, added 17 points and seven rebounds in helping the defending WNBA champions rout the expansion Dream. Phoenix (11-12) just missed its franchise best of 112 points in a game, set in 2006 and matched June 20 against Chicago.

Kasha Terry scored 16 points, including 14 in the first half, and grabbed 11 rebounds for Atlanta (3-21). Ivory Latta added 18 points and Iziane Castro Marques had 17 for the Dream, who have lost four of five after getting the franchise's first wins.

Phoenix scored nine straight points in the third period to take a 78-55 advantage and Atlanta never got closer than 19 the rest of the way. The Mercury have won consecutive games after losing five of six.

The Mercury went on a 14-2 run to end the first quarter to take a 29-13 advantage after the first 10 minutes. Atlanta missed 14 of its first 20 shots and 24 of 37 in the first half as Phoenix took a 51-37 lead at the break.

Four other Mercury players ended up in double figures as all 11 players scored and no one played more than 24 minutes.

Atlanta shot just 26-of-78 from the field, including 4-of-23 from beyond the arc. Phoenix also scored 18 points off 16 turnovers.
