Hank Aaron, Willie Mays appear together on TV show

By The Associated Press
NEW YORK - Hank Aaron insisted he never resented how players in bigger cities received more attention than he did while toiling for years in Milwaukee.

``Hank is lying,'' interjected Willie Mays.

In an event billed as a meeting of baseball's two greatest living players, Aaron and Mays sat together on a stage during a baseball-themed live broadcast of the HBO show ``CostasNow'' on Wednesday night.

They kept chatting for so long after the planned television portion ended their continued conversation was shown live on the Internet that the network decided on the fly to re-air the segment later.

Playing out of the spotlight ``gave me more desire and more incentive,'' Aaron said. Mays asserted his legs had first-hand knowledge of Aaron giving a little extra when he faced the Giants he said Aaron always hit the ball so that Mays was forced to run all around the field.

Host Bob Costas inquired about rumors that Aaron and Mays didn't get along.

``That's so far from the truth,'' Aaron replied. ``We were competitors, but there was no resentment, no animosity.''

Mays recalled he asked to borrow one of Aaron's bats when he was in a slump.
