ATHENS - Authorities have charged a teenager in a fatal hit-and-run accident that left a mother lying in a ditch along an Athens roadway.
Police charged a 15-year-old with drunken driving and vehicular homicide Friday, nearly a week after 19-year-old Nayasheika Cooper was killed as she and her 3-year-old son walked to a convenience store on June 14. The suspect was not identified.
Athens-Clarke police Sgt. Don Eckert says officers matched the teen's pickup truck to debris found at the scene of the accident. Police say the teen confessed to hitting Cooper after he was questioned by officers.
The suspect is being held at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center. Authorities were unsure whether he would be charged as a juvenile or an adult.
