Ark. linebacker dismissed from Razorbacks

By The Associated Press
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Linebacker Freddie Fairchild, arrested in March on misdemeanor charges of battery and false imprisonment, has been dismissed from the Razorback football team, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said Wednesday.

Petrino had suspended Fairchild the day after his March 24 arrest by Fayetteville police following a report by a woman that he had attacked her.

``Freddie Fairchild has been dismissed from our football team,'' Petrino said in a prepared statement. ``Since his suspension last March, he has not participated in team activities. As his status with our team has been resolved, we will make no further comment regarding this matter.''

Fairchild's name was omitted from the Razorback depth chart issued after the conclusion of spring practice.

The day after Fairchild's arrest, Petrino said Fairchild would be provided with ``the appropriate support'' until resolution of his case.

``The Razorback football program is committed to a high standard of conduct and our student-athletes are expected to adhere to that standard on and off the field,'' Petrino said in a statement that day.

A preliminary probable-cause statement from a Fayetteville police detective said that Fairchild caused injuries to the woman's ``head, face, extremities and pelvis'' and that ``he would not allow her to leave for several hours.''

Fairchild had been in a ``domestic relationship with the women intermittently for over a year,'' the statement said.

Fairchild pleaded not guilty to the charges in Fayetteville District Court. A trial is scheduled for June 18.

The 21-year-old junior started 11 games last season as a redshirt sophomore. He led the Razorbacks with 4.5 sacks. He also forced one fumble, recovered one and was third on the team with 92 tackles.
