Tomato-associated salmonella reaches Ga.

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Health officials said seven Georgia residents - including one in northeast Georgia - have become ill in a nationwide outbreak of tomato-associated salmonella.

The toll from salmonella-tainted tomatoes has jumped to 228 illnesses, with cases now being reported in 23 states. Georgia was one of six states to join the list on Thursday.

Six of the cases were in the Atlanta area and one in an unidentified town in northeast Georgia. One patient was hospitalized but has since been released.

Georgia Department of Human Resources spokeswoman Taka Wiley says the Georgia patients first became sick between May 20-May 30.

Health officials do not believe any of the contaminated tomatoes were grown in Georgia.
