ATHENS - Youth golfers from throughout the state took their best shot at claiming the Georgia Junior PGA Championship Monday and Tuesday at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, and a number of area golfers performed well.
Drew Czuchry of Auburn claimed the tournament title from a field of 70 competitors with a two-day total of 144 (two-over par). But White County and Johnson High golfers John Luna and Grant Cagle were hot on his heels.
Both Luna, a rising sophomore from Cleveland, and Cagle, a rising junior from Oakwood, fired two-day totals of 150 (eight-over) to finish tied for seventh.
Gainesville High's Justin Cochran, a rising senior, and North Hall's Landry Haynes, also a rising senior, also played well, each firing a two-day 152, tying them for 12th place.
Trojan Jimmy Lloyd was one shot back of his teammate. The rising junior finished tied for 18th with a two-day total of 153.
Michael Green, a rising senior from Rabun County High, finished tied for 28th with a two-day 158. And rising Gainesville High senior Jake Martin fired a two-day 164 to finish 45th.
