Baseball: Otis leads Lumpkin past West Hall (4/23)

By Brian Carter
OAKWOOD - Sophomore Randy Otis pitched five solid innings to lead the Lumpkin County baseball team to a 6-1 win over West Hall Wednesday at West Hall Field.

Otis allowed just one unearned run while surrendering just two hits, four walks, and striking out five in earning the win. Junior Drew Uptegraph finished the game with two perfect innings with a strikeout.

West Hall (7-15, 6-12 region 7-AAA) drew first blood with a run-scoring error that would have gotten Lumpkin County out of a first inning jam. Lumpkin County (11-10, 9-9) responded with two runs in the second on a wild pitch and passed ball with runners at second and thid.

Junior Devin Dunson added to the Indians' lead with an RBI single in the third. Dunson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, run scored, two stolen bases and was hit by a pitch. The Indians added two more in the fourth, one coming from a run-scoring double by senior Sunny Pham, his only hit of the game. Pham later scored on a wild pitch to give Lumpkin a 5-1 advantage.

West Hall failed to produce a baserunner in the final three innings, as Otis struck out the side in the fifth before Uptegraph's perfect finish.

Josh Preston had a double and junior Scott Eichler was the only other Spartan to record a hit.

Junior Chris Guthrie gave Lumpkin a little more breathing room with a two-out RBI double in the seventh. Guthrie also scored a run, stole a base and was walked twice. Junior Blake Sargent led the Indians with two hits and a stolen base as Lumpkin County stole seven bases as a team.

Boone took the tough loss on the mound for West Hall after striking out eight Indians in four innings of work, allowing three earned runs on six hits and five walks. Senior Matt Ginn pitched three solid relief innings for the Spartans, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out three.

West Hall travels to Chestatee on Saturday while Lumpkin County will play host to Gilmer on Friday.
