RABBITTOWN - Zach Bennett continued his mastery of Region 7-AAA tossing a complete-game, three-hitter in leading Gainesville to a 10-1 win over East Hall Wednesday.
Bennett struck out 10 and walked just one allowing just one hit after a pair of hits in the first inning.
Bennett also had another huge day at the plate collecting three hits and three RBI. Robbie Hefflinger had two hits and two RBI, Blaine Martin had one hit and two RBI, and Sloan Strickland had a solo home run for the Elephants.
Zeb Miller took the loss for East Hall going 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs and striking out nine.
The game was tight until the fifth inning with Gainesville leading just 2-1. The Elephants scored two runs in the first and East Hall (7-15, 6-12) answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Drew Adams singled, moved to second on an errant pick-off throw, and then scored on a Ken Wise double.
But the Elephants scored three runs in the fifth and blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
The win kept Gainesville (175, 16-2 in region) in a tie for first place with Flowery Branch with four lefts in the season. Both the Elephants and Falcons are assured of no worse than third place.
Gilmer (16-6, 13-5) currently is in third place and White County (13-9, 11-7) and North Hall (14-8, 11-7) are tied for fourth.
