ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- Joseph Sykora led top-ranked Alabama to a 5-shot lead in the first round of the Southeastern Conference golf championship on Friday, taking the individual lead with a 4-under par 68.
The Crimson Tide took the team lead with a strong back nine after being in fourth place at 4-over after the front side. The Tide came back and ended up shooting 3-under 285 on the Frederic Golf Club course at St. Simons Island.
Alabama is seeking its second SEC golf crown, having won in 1979.
Georgia and Florida were tied for second place with 2-over 290 totals, followed by LSU at 292, Mississippi State 293, South Carolina 294, Tennessee 296, Ole Miss and Kentucky 298, Vanderbilt 300, Auburn 301 and Arkansas 308.
Sykora holds a 2-shot lead over two players, including his own teammate, Michael Thompson. Thompson shot 2-under, 70, and is tied for second with Ole Miss golfer Jesse Speirs. Alabama's Matt Hughes joins the Tide duo among the top 10 individuals. Hughes is tied for 8th at even par, 72.
