Baseball: Bennett powers Elephants past Lumpkin County (3/20)

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Zach Bennett hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning, to propel Gainesville to an 11-2 win over Lumpkin County Thursday in Region 7-AAA baseball action.

The Red Elephants (5-4, 3-1 in region) scored six runs in the first inning before the first out was recorded. Lumpkin starter Graham Lytch walked two batters then Gainesville loaded the bases on a Lumpkin error to set up Bennett's grand slam.

Gainesville added three runs in the second and two more in the sixth.

Lumpkin (3-4, 1-3) led 1-0 after the top of the first inning but couldn't hold the lead. Lytch failed to make it out of the first inning but James Davis pitched five solid innings in relief for the Indians allowing just one unearned run.

Blake Sargent had three hits and Devin Dunson two for Lumpkin.

Gainesville will travel to Chestatee Friday and Lumpkin County will play host to East Hall Friday in a pair of Region 7-AAA matchups.
