Piedmont baseball splits doubleheader

By Brian Carter
DEMOREST -- The Piedmont Lions baseball team recorded a split with visiting Bridgewater College on Tuesday, falling 4-1 in the first game before taking the night cap with a 9-1 victory.

The Lions, who are ranked 10th in NCAA Division-III, are currently 18-4 on the season.

The Bridgewater Eagles snapped the Lions' season-high, nine-game win streak.

Piedmont got on the board first with a single run in the first inning. But the Eagles tallied a single run in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings to preserve the win.

Piedmont was held to only five hits, having only eight total hitters reach base. The one run on five hits was Piedmont's lowest output of the season.

Junior Andy Graf took the tough loss on the mound, throwing a complete game while allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

Yet the Lions rebounded in the second game, scoring twice in the second and once more in the third before exploding for four runs in the fourth. Piedmont capped off the scoring in the fifth on a two-run homer by junior Justin Vorherr, his second of the season.

Senior John Vohlken pitched seven strong innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits and two walks. Sophomore Josh McEachin pitched two perfect innings to secure the win.

Vorherr was 3-for-4 with his homer, scoring three runs total. Senior Evan Nissley contributed with three hits, two of which were doubles, collecting an RBI as well. The Lions collected 17 total hits in the second game, with seven hitters recording a multi-hit performance.

Piedmont returns to action March 20 as it plays host to Centre College at Loudermilk Field beginning at 7 p.m.
