Closed fitness center's equipment to be sold for back taxes

GAINESVILLE - Members of Uptown Fitness in Gainesville may not get money owed them for unused services at the now-closed facility, but the government plans to get what it can of the money it's owed.

A Delinquent Property Tax Sale is planned at 10 a.m. April 1. The items to be sold will be available for viewing that morning between 8 and 9 a.m.

Everything from a baby changing table and toys to all kinds of exercise equipment will go on the auction block.

People who showed up at the fitness center, at 131 Bradford Street, shortly after the first of the year found it closed. It was supposed to re-open Jan. 2.

It did not re-open, and members who showed up right after the holidays found the door locked and wanted to know why they were locked out and why no one was there and no one was answering the phone.

One of them was Michael Subacki.

"We just don't know what happened," Subacki said. "A lot of people with memberships here would like to know what happened. If something happened where they had to close the gym I hate it for them, but they should have at least let everybody know what was going on."

Downtown Gainesville businessman David Rigg said he signed up for a yearly membership last October. He showed up with his gym bag for a noon day workout and found the doors locked.

"I've had no communication whatsoever so this is a shock to me," Rigg said at the time.

Efforts to reach Uptown Fitness owner Keith Allison have been unsuccessful.
